Overview
Setting up email on your Android phone allows you to send, receive, and manage your messages wherever you are. Whether you're using a personal Gmail account, Microsoft Outlook, Yahoo Mail, iCloud, or a business email such as Microsoft 365 or Exchange, Android makes it easy to add and manage multiple email accounts.
This guide walks you through the setup process, explains the different account types, and provides solutions to common email problems such as sync issues, authentication errors, and messages that won't send or receive.
Before You Begin
Before adding your email account, make sure you have:
A stable Wi-Fi or mobile data connection.
Your email address and password.
Any two-factor authentication (2FA) codes if your account uses additional security.
Mail server settings if you're configuring a business or custom domain email account.
How to Add an Email Account
Most Android devices use the Gmail app to manage all types of email accounts.
Step 1
Open the Gmail app.
Step 2
Tap your Profile Picture in the top-right corner.
Step 3
Select Add another account.
Step 4
Choose the type of email account you want to add.
Options include:
Google (Gmail)
Outlook, Hotmail & Live
Yahoo
Exchange & Office 365
Other (IMAP or POP3)
Set Up a Gmail Account
Select Google.
Enter your Gmail address.
Tap Next.
Enter your password.
Complete any security verification if prompted.
Tap I Agree to accept Google's terms.
Your Gmail account will begin syncing automatically.
Set Up Outlook, Hotmail or Live Email
Choose Outlook, Hotmail and Live.
Enter your Microsoft email address.
Enter your password.
Complete any Microsoft security verification.
Grant permission for Android to access your mailbox.
Your Outlook email is now ready to use.
Set Up Yahoo Mail
Select Yahoo.
Sign in with your Yahoo email address and password.
Complete any verification steps.
Allow access when prompted.
Your Yahoo mailbox will start syncing automatically.
Set Up Microsoft 365 or Exchange Email
Business users typically choose Exchange and Office 365.
Enter:
Email Address
Your complete work email address.
Password
Your email password.
If prompted for server information, enter:
Server
outlook.office365.com
Username
Your full email address.
Domain
Leave blank unless your IT administrator has provided one.
Tap Next and accept any security permissions requested by your organisation.
Set Up a Custom IMAP or POP Email Account
If your email provider isn't listed, choose Other.
Enter:
Email Address
Password
Choose either:
IMAP (Recommended)
POP3
Typical IMAP Settings
