BitLocker Recovery Key Problem
What is BitLocker?
BitLocker is a Windows security feature that encrypts the contents of a drive. It helps protect your files if your computer is lost, stolen, or someone attempts to access the drive outside of Windows.
Normally, BitLocker works in the background and you may never notice it. However, Windows can sometimes display a BitLocker Recovery screen and ask for a 48-digit recovery key.
This does not necessarily mean that your hard drive has failed.
Common BitLocker Problems
You may encounter one of these situations:
Windows suddenly asks for a BitLocker recovery key.
The recovery key is required after a BIOS/UEFI change.
BitLocker asks for the key after a Windows update.
The computer asks for the key every time it starts.
You cannot find your BitLocker recovery key.
You have several recovery keys and don't know which one to use.
Windows won't boot after entering the recovery key.
BitLocker recovery appears after changing hardware.
You replaced the motherboard or TPM.
You changed Secure Boot settings.
The computer is stuck at the BitLocker recovery screen.
Microsoft explains that BitLocker recovery can be triggered when Windows detects hardware, firmware, or other changes that affect the trusted boot environment.
Resolution:
If the PC uses a Microsoft account, the recovery key may have been automatically backed up to that account.
Using another computer or phone, sign in using the Microsoft account associated with the affected PC.
Look for the recovery key whose Key ID matches the ID displayed on the BitLocker screen.
Then enter the corresponding 48-digit recovery key into the affected computer
This will unlock the drive, and Windows will boot up
