How to Activate Microsoft Office (Microsoft 365, Office 2021, Office 2019, Office 2016)

If you've installed Microsoft Office but see messages like "Activation Required" or "Unlicensed Product", follow the steps below to activate your copy.

Before You Begin

Make sure you have:

• A stable internet connection

• Your Microsoft account email and password

• A valid Microsoft 365 subscription or Office product key (if applicable)

Method 1: Activate Microsoft 365 (Recommended)

If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription:

Step 1: Open an Office App

Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.

Step 2: Sign In

1. Click Sign In (top-right corner).

2. Enter the Microsoft account associated with your Microsoft 365 subscription.

3. Enter your password.

4. Complete any verification prompts.

Office should activate automatically within a few moments.

Step 3: Verify Activation

1. Open File.

2. Click Account.

3. Under Product Information, you should see:

• Product Activated

• Your Microsoft 365 subscription details

Method 2: Activate with a Product Key

If you purchased a one-time license (Office 2021, Office 2019, or Office 2016):

Step 1

Open Word or another Office application.

Step 2

If prompted, enter your 25-character product key.

Example:

XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Step 3

Sign in with your Microsoft account if requested.

Step 4

Follow the on-screen instructions until activation is complete.

Method 3: Redeem a New Product Key

If your product key hasn't been redeemed yet:

1. 
   Open a web browser.
   

2. 
   Go to the Microsoft Office setup page.
   

3. 
   Sign in with your Microsoft account.
   

4. 
   Enter your 25-character product key.
   

5. 
   Follow the instructions to link the license to your Microsoft account.
   

6. 
   Open an Office app and sign in with the same account to activate Office.
   

Method 4: Activate Office After Reinstalling Windows

If you previously activated Office:

1. 
   Install Microsoft Office.
   

2. 
   Open Word.
   

3. 
   Sign in using the same Microsoft account used during the original activation.
   

4. 
   Office should activate automatically if the license is linked to your account.
   

How to Check Activation Status

1. 
   Open any Office app.
   

2. 
   Click File.
   

3. 
   Select Account.
   

Look under Product Information.

Possible messages include:
